Blimey Coggers,
what a gig yesterday night at the Porgy & Bess here in Vienna. Roy Ayers live on stage with the same line up as two years ago . This time at one of the best venues for Jazz events in Vienna !
What can I say, impressive, massive, excellent. Roy seems to get younger rather than older. He's looking healthy and vital, so does Ray Gaskin on Rhodes and Sax. I was also very impressed with the very young drum player from London: Troy Miller (seems he played with "our" Ed Jones too in the past Killer Shrimp ?!)
But knowing that Tony Smith will be part of the band again made the evening even more special. and he tore it apart right from the start. 1st track and tony 's been soloing some 5 minutes in is very own rockjazz style. amazing . Roy just watched him and kept shaking his head to Tony's performance, like he'd be saying - this kid is sick
catch Roy live while touring Europe !!
Tony Smith at : http://www.tonysmithguitar.com/ (the UK 's finest Jazz Funk guitarist .... that's what his homepage says...
Again Roys electro vibes were not working throughout the concert (same like 2 years ago btw!) . Great concert with the obvious classics and plenty of Tony soloing due to Roys not working vibes. And a 30 sec clip of Always There by Ray on the sax - niiice ! _________________ Stefan

A drummer friend of mine saw Roy in Manchester at the Mint Lounge a couple of weeks ago and was equally blown away. He also mentioned that the arrangements of the tunes were a lot more "Clubby" which actually had Mancunians dancing! Now that is a feat!
Unfortunately it was on a weeknight so couldn't make personally. He needs to come to Nottingham! _________________

Didn't I say that too? Must be true. The guy is a miracle .
Glad you enjoyed the gig, Stef.

Re: Roy's youthful appearance - he must be sending someone else out on stage in disguise, like The Drifters have been doing for the last 30 years (They'll put out a white man and hope no-one notices next...) _________________

Thanks for the review Stefan.
Sounds you had a great time.
I've never seen Roy Ayers live and he's one of the artist on top of my list to see live. Meanwhile, got any pics from that gig?

Aaaah, Roy! I saw him at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2003. What a gig at the Miles Davis Hall. The crowd went mental when Jay "Jamiroquai" Kay hopped on stage and jammed with Roy, after bowing to him for minutes. Rightly so! Roy is da man! Make sure you also buy his latest CDs with previously unreleased tracks "Roy Ayers Virgin Ubiquity Vol 1 + 2"
Nice! Stef, where can I find the tour schedule?
Cheers,
Kai _________________ Only the ridiculous survive! |

Yeah he puts on a great show - we saw him in Zurich in 2003 with Ray Gaskin - we had to leave at the end and miss Beady Belle and Carleen Anderson who were on afterwards but Mrs Dufster was heavily pregnant with little Dufster at the time so she is forgiven! _________________ Keep Groovin'
